Tan Tan Men @ Hokkaido Ramen Santouka – Vancouver, BC

The second stop on my mini ramen crawl this week was Hokkaido Ramen Santouka. This was actually my 3rd trip to this location. Hokkaido Ramen Santouka location on Robson since I’d previously been there on visits to Vancouver just a few months ago. This time I got together with my foodie’s friends, Grayelf and A la carte for lunch.

I had scheduled for this lunch at Ramen Santouka because so far it’s my go-to place to eat Ramen located in Vancouver which is why I had been eagerly anticipating having the other two of my favorite Ramen there.

However, I was hoping that I was hoping that the Tan Tan Men were available to test. I’d heard that Ramen Santouka is one of the few spots in Vancouver that offer Tan Tan Men that is also called Tan Tan Ramen.

It is believed that the Tan Tan Men is actually the Japanese version of the famous Chinese Sichuan dish, the Dandan Noodles or Dan Dan Mian. I was eager to try the one from Ramen Santouka since I wanted to compare it with that of Chili Goma Ramen that I had tried at Shikiji which is located in Calgary. Lucky for me this time, it turned out that the Tan Tan Men was offered in Ramen Santouka on this visit.

($10.95)

As I’ve tested the Toroniku Shio Ramen and the Toroniku Kara Miso Ramen on previous trips It was obvious to try Tan Tan Men Tan Tan Men on this visit, particularly since this is available only during winter months.

Tan Tan Men ($10.95) Tan Tan Men ($10.95) has an underlying soup made from pork broth, Soy Sauce chili oil, sesame paste, and chili paste. The soup was a hit with both Grayelf as well as I decided to give it a go since neither of us had previously tried this soup from Ramen Santouka prior to that.

Like every time, we asked that our noodles be a bit firmer. The portion consisting of Tan Tan Men was with tender ground pork which was tossed with an almost sweet sauce and topped with diced scallions as well as sesame seeds, as well as chili threads.

                                                      $9.45

My friend who loves food, A La Carte, was able to order a small amount of Kara Miso Ramen ($8.45 for a small portion; $9.45 in regular size; $10.45 to get big). It was spicy. Kara Miso Ramen generally had the same toppings similar to the hot toroniku Kara Miso Ramen I tried on my previous visit. However, it was not Toroniku (slices from simmered pork Jowl) the dish was served with a piece of the char siu (Japanese-style roast pork).

                                                                ($5.45),

We could not visit Ramen Santouka without ordering our most-loved item which is that being the Toroniku ($5.45), which is slices of pork jowl that have been simmered. Because the Tan Tan Men did not come with a selection for toroniku Grayelf I and Grayelf decided that we’d order two sides of the toroniku to share between a trio of us. It was a great experience. toroniku slices tasted exactly as we thought they would be. They were delicious and melted into our mouths.

We also were able to share a plate of Shibazuke ($2.00), which is a mix of cucumber and eggplant steamed in the shoyu (soy sauce) as well as ume vinegar with red/purple Shiso leaves. This was my first time tasting the Shibazuke and I thoroughly enjoyed the crunch and the tanginess. Tanginess and acidity of this Shibazuke served as a cleanser for the palate and was a great way to cut through the creamy taste that is the Tan Tan Ramen broth and the weightiness in the Toroniku.

                                                                  ($2.00),

I’m so glad that I got to taste these Tan Tan Men at Ramen Santouka as now my desire to try them was satisfied. From now on I’m planning to order the Toroniku Shio Ramen as well as Toroniku Kara Miso Ramen. Toroniku Kara Miso Ramen at Ramen Santouka because they are my absolute favorites.
